My 2 cents: Widening the master is a risky business, there's often no improvement and if there is the spot is very small, e.g. 1-10% widening (probably more like 1-4%),, after that, horrible things start to happen that arent instantly obvious in the moment, when you're enjoying that fizz on the outside of the speakers! On tracks it's different, esp. for background effects. Also hard panning tracks, and/or one or two complex panning effects on some parts (here, widening can work just great), works great for a proper stereo sound.Caveat is that I'm an amateur and can only speak about my own painful amateur experiences! Hope that helpsGeorge Registered User Joined: May 2012 Posts: 146 🎧 10 years yo thanks for your input man, yeah i agree ive experimented myself and it works alot better by just putting the plugin on seperate instruments.wanted to know what every1 else was doing though. what vst do u use for stereo widening?peace. I use the waves S1 on tracks, and always for midside eq. I'm sure there are better out there but it's a good plug. Mid-side eq is another one btw - don't expand the stereo, shrink the stereo of the bass and kick [edit: using MS eq on the master bus, not on the tracks] (make it more mono - it should be mono in the tracks too, but this can still help) - mid-side all of the bass out of the side (I'm not expert but a relatively gentle slope but taken up to the mid-high end of the bass guitar, or those notes at least, i.e. quite severe.) When I hear wide stereo in pro tracks, it's almost always twinkly and fizzing, i.e. its the highs that are wide. The contrast when you mid-side eq is another step on the way to that sound,Comments

2025-03-30From my experience at least. I think that's my 4c now Registered User Joined: Mar 2012 Posts: 1,128 🎧 10 years Always make sure to check in mono after you add a stereo imager make sure it's not out of phase. Also waves has a Paz analyzer which is great to pull up and just see exactly how wide your image is going. You don't want it to drift in that anti phase zone and disappear when it's played in mono. Hope that helpsGeorge What he said. Widening using a stereo imager on the master bus more often than not causes problems rather than fixes them. GJ999x was right when he said you may not notice the damage when you're doing it. If you absolutely have to do it, adjust the image ever so slightly and try referencing other material to keep your perception grounded. You don't want to find yourself listening to a widened stereo image for an extended period of time and have it affect your perception on how wide it actually SHOULD be.
