How to use the netscan command to focus Windows port scanning. When security scanners (or hackers) look for vulnerable ports on Windows PCs and other computers, they'll often perform port scans. These may target only well-known ports, or those for which vulnerabilities exist, or may work their way through the entire range of valid UDP and TCP port addresses (0 through 65,535, which tells those with "binary sophistication" that port addresses are 16 bits in length). System or network admins seeking to foil such scans, or to check port status on exposed machines, can get quick, accurate help from the Windows command line utility named netstat (for great detail on this utility, see the Windows netstat reference page online). Use the command netstat –an to produce a listing of TCP and UDP ports that have been used or are active or in "listening" status on a Windows computer (this command works with all modern Windows versions, the listing that follows came from a Windows XP machine, with SP2 and all current security updates, patches, and fixes installed). Right click Inbound Rules and select New Rule4 Add the port you need to open and click Next5. Mike I followed your instructions and set up the firewall. I rebooted the computer and checked the firewall settings again and shows open. When I use the scanany app from my smart phone (on the same network) I only see UDP ports 137, 1900, 5353, & 5355 open. I’m attaching the export from the firewall page . I've created two rules to allow each subnet to talk to the WAN connection and all of that appears to be working well. I have an additional rule to allow the LAN to communicate with Wifi; but Wifi cannot communicate with the LAN unless I poke holes through the firewall for specific applications which I have done. I created a last catch-all drop rule to log anything that isn't matched by earlier rules so I can see them in the logs. Everything is good. However, I've been trying to get a Sonos speaker working in my house. When I use my phone which is on the Wifi subnet, the speaker works great. I'm trying to get the software from my wired PC to work with the speaker and I've been unable to succeed. The problem is clear in the logs, I see many packets that are from my PC with src port 1901 and dst port 1900 to dst IP 255.255.255.255. I think these are UPnP broadcast packets looking for the speaker but these packets from my PC are being dropped by the last catch-all rule. I did some googling and found a couple of threads on another Sophos forum (UTM):how-to-allow-traffic-to-general-broadcastrule-to-block-ssdp-1900-udp One of these mention that the broadcast address isn't recognized by the "Any" tag and that it was necessary to create it. I also followed both threads instructions to create a UPNP service. However, when I define the rule in the list and put it in the middle of my rule set those log entries still get dropped by the catch-all rule!
