Skip to content Beautiful project from Frank Milburn on element14:Screaming LM386: An Audio Amplifier with PCB ArtI decided to give PCB art a try and will be basing my attempt on methods described by Andrew Sowa. Andrew uses Adobe Illustrator for the art work and KiCad for the PCB design. I will also use KiCad but will use my trusty pre-subscription version of Photoshop for the artwork. Inkscape is another possibility. Andrew’s process is described in this video from which my work is derived. The detail behind many of the steps won’t be described in this post – watch the video for that. The goal is to take a photograph, painting, etc. and place it on a PCB using the FR4, copper layer, solder mask, and silk screen to make the palette. My PCB will feature the famous work by Edvard Munch, The Scream which has always fascinated me. So, how to turn a masterpiece into a PCB facsimile?PaletteThe limited palette is a challenge. For this exercise the focus will be on the central figure in order to reduce board size (and thus cost) of the experiment. The OSHPark purple solder mask will hopefully give the dark colors desired. Andrew also used OSHPark in his example, and helpfully provided a palette which has been modified here to help describe how the layers translate to color and are stacked for conversion in KiCad.There is a shared project for the board:And watch it on YouTube: Angela Sheehan has made a beautiful LED badge based on Syd Weiler’s Trash Dove sticker:Trash Dove BadgeAn LED badge I created as a Valentine gift for my partner. The artwork is a rendering of a sticker we often send each other in conversation on messenger.I had fun using this project as a way to gain more practice in AutoDesk EAGLE. first thing I did was draw a simplified rendering of the artwork in Illustrator with a condensed palette. The original artwork uses a few different shades of color.Luckily, OSHPark’s signature purple solder mask, ENIG, and white silk were already pretty good matches for the original sticker palette, so

It is used by professional engineers and circuit board designer around the world for schematics drawing of electronics circuit board and for PCB board Prototyping. The design step to design PCB board is to enter the electronics schematics, then to perform simulation and other analysis. If the simulation result are correct then footprint are added for PCB board design. Then the next step is to transfer the designed Orcad schematics to PCB layout tool called allegro PCB. The nice feature of this PCB board design software is that there are lots of automation during the transfer process of orcad schematic to PCB board design making it easy for designers to quickly develop PCB for manufacturing. During the PCB design, it provides very useful features such as components placing, auto routing and design of multiple layer pcb and others. After the PCB board design is completed, it generates Geber PCB file required by the PCB manufacturers. Gerber PCB is the final file required which in case of orcad is generated by the artwork tool. PCB file when the PCB document is printed or plotted. Other special strings relate to layer names, file names and printing options. The .Comment and .Designator strings are used when creating component footprints. The .Legend string shows a drill symbol legend when the string is placed on the Drill Drawing layer. To use a special string on a PCB, place a string object then use the button to access a drop-down list of all special strings (both system-based and those sourced from defined project-level parameters) then select the desired name. Special string names begin with the period or full stop character ".". The values of some special strings can only be viewed when the relevant output is generated, including the .Legend, .Plot_File_Name, and .Printout_Name. Most special strings can be viewed on screen. When generating documentation for a PCB project and releasing into a server, there needs to be some way of indicating which Item and Revision the documentation relates to, as well as the configuration of the design project used in the release and any applicable driving variant. A set of special strings are available to manage this, including .PCBConfigurationName, .ItemAndRevision, and .VariantName. These special strings are not interpreted until the time the output is generated (unless viewing the PCB in 3D, which itself is considered an output). The information supplied by using these strings can be seen on generated output including Gerber/ODB++ files, Final Artwork prints, PCB prints, PCB 3D prints, PCB 3D Video, and Assembly drawings.FillObject Page: FillA fill is a rectangular object that can be placed on any layer. When placed on a signal layer, a fill becomes an area of solid copper that can be used to provide shielding or to carry large currents. Fills of varying size can be combined to cover irregularly shaped areas and can also be combined with track or arc segments and be connected to a net.Fills can also be placed on non-electrical layers. For example, place a Fill on the Keep-Out layer to designate a 'no-go' area for both autorouting and autoplacement. Place a fill on a Power Plane, Solder Mask, or Paste Mask layer to create a void on that layer. In the PCB Library Editor, fills can be used to define component footprints.Fills can be placed as layer-specific keepout objects to act, for example, as routing barriers. Objects defined as keepouts are ignored by output operations, such as photo plotting. The PCB artwork was drafted using OrCAD Layout (v10.3). Set a value for ads_sdart like artwork or outputs. I searched in there and never found that...thanks so much. One thing, it does not seem to be design specific. For example, if I set the parameter for Board A, when I start Board B, its has the same setting. If I set the parameter for Board B, Board A is changed also. Correct, it's a default system setting and not design specific. Use something like output or artwork then under each design you have you will have that directory. Another useful thing can be the artwork prefix and suffix. Ideal for jobname- and -issueX so your artwork films can be similar, TOP, BOTTOM, GND, SSTOP etc but use the prefix and suffix per jobname.Understanding PCB Artwork Data - Allegro X PCB Editor - PCB

It helpful.EasyEDAEasyEDA creates a different paradigm for PCB design by making its tool an online-based PCB designing tool. I (personally) find it intriguing when creating designs that demand collaborative efforts, especially when designing or working with physically unreachable engineers.EasyEDA is a better tool for DIY projects because it’s cheap, demands fewer resources, and performs essential tasks. It is recommended for its vast support of designs from other designing tools, ease of use, and open-source nature. Besides, you don’t have to install it; you will quickly get going if you can open it on a browser.ProteusJust like Eagle, Proteus is a vendor-off-the-shelf PCB designing software application developed and owned by LabCenter Electronics. It is a powerful tool with over 800 microcontroller options to choose from when designing your circuit. Then again, Proteus is costly to acquire. It is an excellent tool for professional use. But if you are working on a tight budget as a hobbyist, feel welcome to skip it.TinyCADNow, TinyCAD is the “plain and simple” PCB designing tool. This product of Sourceforge is free to use, but its design is highly simplified. I do recommend it highly when drawing schematics. It is an excellent tool for experimentation and a perfect tool for hobbyist DIY projects. Nevertheless, it lacks the right testing tools for professional usage.NOTEPCB arts demand art ideas. After choosing an ideal tool, you will need to carefully consider the concept behind the art you will develop and whether it will be easy and affordable to produce it. Once you establish your idea, the process of designing it is simple. It often follows the steps below.Steps to Designing a PCB ArtworkStep 1: All PCB Artwork Designs Begin with SchematicsBefore you set out to develop any PCB Art, it is recommendable to lay out the circuit schematic of the PCB youViewing artwork - PCB Design - PCB Design IC Packaging
