Photoshop Elements. It shows up toward the bottom of the info panel. People-tagging on Mylio is just that: You create a tag for each acquaintance, mark photos containing them, and then you can view all photos that include the tagged individual, but it doesn't include any face recognition technology. One shortcoming of Mylio's maps is that you can't search for a location; you just navigate to it on the map and give it whatever name you'd like. Mylio uses the excellent OpenStreetMap.org, and I'm happy to say that my iPhone photos' geotags were carried over at import, so I could pinpoint their locations on the map. Photo Editing All the standard tools are at your disposal: Exposure, Contrast, white balance (but without a dropper to pick a white point), shadows, highlights, sharpness, and saturation. There are even Lightroom-like Clarity and Vibrance adjusters. I also like the color sliders for black and white treatments, letting you separately adjust red, green, and blue filter strength. You can even copy and paste adjustment sets for use on other photos. Of course, serious photographers working on desktop PCs will likely want to use a more powerful, profile-based photo editor such as Lightroom, DxO Optics Pro, or Phase One Capture. Mylio, however, does let you import from your Lightroom catalog. Mylio on Mobile The case for Mylio becomes stronger when you install its iPhone app. The interface is appealing, with your collection thumbnails finger-skimmable. It not only syncs all your photos and videos immediately to your other Mylio apps, but it also gives you the same photo-editing tools as the desktop app. The ability to see your iPhone photos' location on a map is something you don't get in iCloud, but you do with Lightroom syncing. One nice thing about Mylio's syncing from iOS devices is that as soon as your turn on syncing, all your iPhone or iPad photos start syncing. With other services such as iCloud, by contrast, only the photos you take after enabling iCloud Photos are synced. One problem with Mylio's syncing, however, is that it wasn't completely reliable in my testing. On my home PC, everything synced promptly. But on my work PC, while some of my iPhone photos showed up eventually, there were plenty of black empty spots among my thumbnails. Even when I clicked on the black areas, the app didn't sync them immediately, as I'd expected. Instead, I got a message saying "Thumbnails can't be edited…" Heck, I didn't even have a thumbnail to look at. Sharing Mylio's standard share button offers email, Facebook, Flickr, along with printing and exporting. With Facebook, Mylio lets you chose a target album or create a new one. For emailing and. 2025-04-01As a fan of both photography and cloud services, I have my photos syncing to more online destinations than I can remember. I have my shots auto-uploading to OneDrive, iCloud, Flickr, and probably other services. Even Facebook lets you auto-upload your mobile snaps now. My approach to photo preservation has plenty of redundancy built in, but it's more haphazard than I'd like. The goal of startup photo service Mylio ($50 per year) is to marshal your disparate photo collections into one organized, always-available library, accessible through apps for Windows, Mac, and iOS (Android is coming later). Mylio takes all your photos, whether from, say, your phone, D-SLR, or Facebook, and stores and organizes them. Available online and at photography retail locations, Mylio is not exactly a cloud sharing and storage service like Flickr. Instead, it offers private photo and video syncing. Mylio does, however, give you the option to also back your collection up to the cloud. It's also good at photo organization and editing, though it trails Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop Elements in these aspects. Mylio's pricing is quite a bit steeper than that of Flickr, but then again, Mylio claims to be providing you with more capability than the free-terabyte service from Yahoo, and it never shows you ads. I started testing Mylio by downloading and installing its Windows software on a Windows 8.1 PC. Three account levels are available: Basic ($50 per year), Standard ($100), and Advanced ($250). These allow 50,000, 100,000, and 500,000 images, respectively, and the top two levels allow raw camera files and more powerful photo editing. A free trial with no time limits gives you up to 1,000 files total, on up to three devices. Similar Products Get Going with MylioAfter activating the account via an emailed link and logging into the program, I set up Mylio on my PC, but before I could start using it, I had to let it through my Windows Firewall. It's doable, but Mylio's ideal use-case is not on a company-issued PC protected by a corporate firewall. Next, a short helpful video shows you how to start using the apps and service. The setup automatically creates a Mylio Pictures folder under your main user folder—I'd actually prefer it to place this under the standard Pictures folder, as iCloud Photo Stream does. Since I didn't really want such a large-footprint folder in my C: drive, I'd have appreciated Mylio asking me which drive it should use upon installation. You can change this destination later in the Preferences, but it's not button-press simple. Interface Mylio's default desktop interface is good-looking, with a dark, Lightroom-like appearance. In the Preferences, you can switch to a light-gray interface and choose among three
2025-04-21Text-size options. Browsing through photos is quick, and you can do so with the mouse wheel. A side panel switches among Info, People, Locations, Edit, and Sync modes, while a left one offers navigation options among folders, albums, and other views. Navigating your collection is easy and intuitive. You can view your photo collection as fluid rectangular fitted tiles or square tiles, sortable by name, date, or rating. A zoom slider lets you resize the tiles to your taste. Along the bottom are buttons for ratings, sharing, rotating, and cropping. I like that Mylio preserved my ratings from imported Flickr photos; photo thumbnails show their ratings and edit status. Importing and Organizing A key to using Mylio is importing your photos from a computer or mobile device—and not only from storage, but also from Facebook, Flickr, and Lightroom. Folder import choices include copying a folder, moving one, adding one—that is, without changing its existing location. By choosing Copy during import—the first choice—you use up to twice the storage for the same photo collection. I prefer a system like Lightroom's, which lets you keep photos where they are while simply creating a database of the photo's locations and properties, and as it turns out, Mylio's third option Add, does exactly this. I recommend using that import option. You can also add a NAS device as your import target. One confusing aspect of the service as a whole is figuring out whether photos are actually stored in the Mylio cloud or just on hard drives, external media, or mobile devices. By default, they stay on the hard drives you specify, but from the Sync side panel, you can turn on cloud backup. Serious photography and computer enthusiasts will be able to master it, but Mylio could make choosing a strategy clearer at setup. Organizing, Editing, Mobile When you copy a folder, you keep its existing folder organization intact, with choices to import the folder or just its contents. Importing 275 photos from my desktop took about 2 minutes. An issue with importing from Flickr is that you have to pick an album; you can't just import your whole photo stream. Organization tools include all the standbys: star ratings, color coding, and grouping photos into albums. A lightbox view lets you select multiple photos that sit at the bottom of the screen for easy pasting to another album or folder. You can also view your last imported set or perform a search, but there aren't smart albums based on metadata criteria like those found in many photo organizers these days. The icing on the cake is map geotagging and people tagging. Standard keyword tagging is less obvious in Mylio than in Lightroom or
